Student Mentoring:

I have been particularly interested in creating a stimulating environment for engaging undergraduates in biomedical research, especially students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Since joining Loyola in 1994, I have mentored thirty-four undergraduate students and six graduate students in original research in my lab. Of these undergraduate students, 75% were female, 47% minority (African-American or Hispanic) and 14% foreign students from countries where Chagas disease is a public health threat. I have directed honors theses for twenty-nine undergraduates working in my laboratory and fourteen additional undergraduate students working in other faculty labs. All of the research students mentored in my lab have advanced in biomedicine. The students have successfully competed for $38,706 in research funding.
